To obtain consistent and accurate results, the microscopic slides should be observed under clean surroundings, which ensures productivity and is crucial for the safety required for the tasks performed with the slide. To clean the microscope slide, an individual should know the following materials:

Distilled Water: 

Distilled water is ideal for the user and should only be consumed for cleaning slides as it is pure water. So, for the experiments carried out in laboratories, distilled water must be used for rinsing of microscopic slides in a test or experiment. The reason for not utilizing impure water is that it increases the probability of changing the density, conductivity, and chemical reactivity during the process. Thus, microscopic slides should only be rinsed with distilled or pure water.

Laboratory disinfectant: 

Laboratory detergent is also utilized for hand washing laboratory devices; it is recommended to use the detergent with a lower Ph for absolute cleaning. Moreover, it is a skin-friendly and safe option for the user and experimenter. The detergent is especially crucial for the extracting process of titration.

Microscopic lint-free Wipes:

Lint-free wipes have incredible versatility and a wide range of uses. The material is usually used to sanitize medical instruments in the medical field. However, lint-free wipes can also be used to clean the microscopic slides as they are especially effective in removing stains, bacteria, and other residue.

Microscopic Slide Cove Slips: 

The coverslips are usually placed over the microscopic slide, protecting the slide from contamination. Secondly, coverslips are also used to protect the samples during the process. 

Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA):

Isopropyl alcohol is another type of liquid used to clean the slides, apart from detergent. It is also a preferable choice for cleaning in laboratories because this cleaning solution has a rapid evaporation rate. Moreover, it evaporates cleanly and is very effective against residues that cannot be removed with standard cleaning agents.

Compressed Air:

Compressed Air cans are often used for cleaning slides. So, using the instrument helps remove light dirt and dust particles. A short burst of air from the can blow away any tiny dirt particles from the surfaces of the slide.

The General Procedure to Clean Slides

  • The First step in the procedure is to mix and blend the cleaning solution (laboratory detergent) with pure or distilled water. For dilution, It is recommended to follow the detergent manual or label. 
  • Visualize the slide and remove any visible dirt and dust particles with the assistance of Compressed air cans. This action will reduce any visible contaminants from the slide.
  • The following step includes placing the slide into the container filled with distilled water and detergent. The slide inside the container should be set for at least 30 minutes. This soaking method will allow the slide to remove any attached stubborn residues. You can use a soft and gentle medical bristle or lint-free wipes to remove the remaining residue. Remove the stain thoroughly and gently with the materials mentioned to avoid damage.
  • Subsequently, use the distilled water to remove any possible detergent solution residue. At this point, you should verify that all the possible residue is removed from the slide to prevent any future disruptions that may arise during observations.
  • After distillation, allow the slide to air-dry at room temperature or use lint-free wipes for further slide cleaning. The purpose of using lint-free wipes is to ensure no possible water marks are left on the slide. 
  • Some stains are stubborn and cannot be erased with the cleaning mentioned above steps. Hence, it would help if you used Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA). This cleaning solution should only be operated using lint-free wipes. 
  • Perform the visualization using a microscope to ensure no contaminants and residue are left that may affect your following observations and experiments.
  • Store the cleaned slide in a dust-free Area to avoid any irregularities arising before use.

  1. Washing Unit:

 The Washing Unit consists of two containers: a cleaning agent container and a waste container. Apart from these two containers, other components include a slide loader, lid, and hydrophobic filter.

  1. Drying Unit: 

The drying unit is attached to the washing unit during the experiment. It contains a pressure sensor, a silicone slide drying bed, and a plug connected to the washing unit during the process.

The Process to Clean Microscopic Slide Using Iwash Slide Cleaner:

  • The first step in cleaning the slide is to ensure all the components are checked against the packing list and should only be connected using the given manual.
  • With the assistance of the given manual, the washer is connected to the drying unit.
  • After connecting both devices, the washing agent should be inserted in the cleaning agent container with the assistance of a pipette. Moreover, cleaning agent fluid should be mixed according to the manual’s given ratio, ensuring consistency. Simultaneously, the waste container is filled with silicone deformer solution.
  • After the liquid is filled and both containers are connected to the system, the used or new microscopic slide is inserted into the slide loader. Furthermore, you must ensure that the lid of the device is perfectly closed, validating that the microscopic slide is flushed with the chamber of Iwash.
  • Push either the manual or automatic knob/button to start the process. Slides are then effectively cleaned with a cleaning agent inserted into the device by a container. At the same time, the waste fluid is collected in another container.
  • Staining dye is inserted into the slide chamber to ensure an absolute cleaning of the microscopic slide. After completion of the washing cycle, the lid is opened, and the slide dryer is removed from the device. It is recommended that the microscope slide should be left overnight at room temperature. 
  • Visual inspection ensures the slide is dry and free of any remaining wash liquid. Hence, this procedure will verify that the system is configured correctly and ready for other required usage.

Recommendations:

  1. It would help if you only used a proper cleaning cloth designed for the slide, which increases longevity and avoids unnecessary scratches.
  2. Always use medical gloves to reduce contamination.
  3. Regularly clean the instruments and slides according to the manufacturer’s manual to ensure safety.
